Job Description:

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibility involving the coordination, supervision and direction of a correctional security program in a state adult correctional facility.

Typical Functions
  • Coordinates and supervises or directs correctional security functions and activities at an adult correctional facility; may serve as a shift supervisor with responsibility for all assigned units and functions in a large facility or as the chief of security in a smaller facility.
  • May serve as commander of a correctional emergency response team; schedules training exercises and coordinates activities.
  • Conducts special investigations, particularly concerning incidents that occur during assigned shifts.
  • Coordinates and supervises security, riot and escape procedures, including procedures for inmate counts and searches for escape materials and contraband.
  • Prepares daily work schedules for security personnel; prepares and maintains appropriate records concerning employees and residents.
  • Conducts inspections of assigned staff at the beginning of shift to assure proper attire and fitness for duty; makes periodic inspections of posts to assure they are properly maintained; prepares administrative reports concerning the operation of the shift.
  • Acts as liaison to local law enforcement agencies; provides information and file changes; arranges court appearances.
  • Serves as a member of the administrative institutional staff; participates in the formulation of institutional policies, rules and regulations.
Level Descriptor

At this level employees serve as a correctional security lieutenant with primary responsibilities for the security operations on an assigned shift or unit within a minimum security facility or hospital security unit, supervising first‑level supervisors and coordinating all shift functions and operations, including specialized units in medium/maximum security facilities.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques; staffing patterns and scheduling, discipline for inmates under restraint; psychology of inmate behavior; use and care of firearms; restraint methods and techniques; fundamentals of English usage; basic math; report writing techniques.

Abilities to establish and maintain effective working relationships; follow oral and written instructions; gather and organize facts and complete clear, concise reports; quickly evaluate situations and adopt effective courses of action; exercise alertness and act swiftly in emergencies; effectively communicate security techniques; maintain firearms proficiency; assess and manage conflict resolutions within the inmate population.

Education and Experience

Three years of experience in correctional or security work for a government agency or private corrections agency. Minimum age 20 years. Possession of 30 semester hours from an accredited college or university or a high‑school diploma/ GED equivalent and completion of a training course approved by the Department within the first six months.

Special Requirements
  • Good moral character.
  • Satisfactory completion of a correctional officer and guard training program before duty alone.
  • Satisfactory completion of a fitness test annually.
  • Valid driver’s license at appointment; subject to drug testing.
  • Willing and able to work any assigned shift or day of the week.
  • Designation as a peace officer if required; must meet training and screening requirements set by the Department and the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.
  • Disqualifications for individuals with certain unexpunged convictions (see state statutes).
