About the Position:

Drive and operate the controls of railroad maintenance vehicles to repair and maintain railways.

Who May Apply:

US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element):
  • Ability to do the work of a(n) Railroad Maintenance Vehicle Operator ~ without more than normal supervision.
  • Perform common duties operating the utility controls of flanged wheel railroad repair equipment to;
  • Perform railroad maintenance such as rail alignment of straight and curved sections of track; tie replacement, spacing and spiking; and ballast maintenance;
  • Operate rail or track liner vehicles, mobile spike driving and tie pulling equipment or ballast regulators, and perform basic operator maintenance on the equipment being used.
  • – Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT

Moderate to heavy physical exertion is required in operating machines and tools used on track maintenance and in loading and unloading track materials (ties, rail, switch parts and other hardware). Operators also typically lift and move heavy items weighing 80 pounds and more. All lifts over 50 pounds will be assisted with a two person lift or using a mechanical handling equipment lifting device.

The two person lift limit is 100 pounds and will only be used for single event, non-routine lifts.

WORKING CONDITION

The operator is exposed to a wide range of weather, and temperature conditions, high noise levels, fumes and odors from fuel, exhaust, lubricants, creosote, and possible accidents.
