The U.S. Probation Office for the Southern District of Texas is one of the largest federal probation offices among the nation's 94 federal judicial districts. U.S. Probation is part of the federal judiciary, and together with the district courts, the appellate courts and the Supreme Court, make up the judicial branch of the federal government. The Southern District of Texas consists of the following seven divisional offices:
Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Houston, Laredo, McAllen and Victoria.
The Probation Administrative Assistant assists the probation officer in his/her investigation and supervision responsibilities. This position is not a career path to becoming a United States Probation Officer, and any experience gained in this position will not provide an applicant with an advantage over other applicants in future Probation Officer hiring initiatives.
The starting salary range for this position is CL 23 ($40,346 - $65,631) annually, based on experience and qualifications, with promotional opportunity to CL 24 ($44,701 - $72,654).
Responsibilities- Conduct inquiries and collect verifiable information and supporting documentation.
- Enter, analyze, and maintain data in the office's computerized database.
- Prepare and process forms, documents, and reports according to internally established standards and procedures.
- Prepare and update case files.
- Answer and screen phone calls and provide information to a wide variety of individuals representing the court, other agencies, and the general public.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Two years of general clerical or office experience required.
- High school diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of people.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to make constructive suggestions for improvements in work processes to better achieve the goals and objectives of the department.
- Good organizational skills required.
- Experience and proficiency with PCs and Microsoft Office software, including Word and Excel, are required.
- Minimum of 50 WPM typing preferred.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or be able to prove that U.S. citizenship is being sought in a timely manner.
