Position: Early Head Start (EHS) Teacher

Overview

To provide learning for infants and toddlers using a developmentally appropriate curriculum, promoting their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth through routines and activities. Under immediate supervision, is responsible for reports/documentation regarding the families and children assigned, and decisions are made on a routine level. Maintains daily contact with families participating in the program and, on occasion, with the general public.

Must abide by the Early Head Start Performance Standards, Texas Minimum Standards for Child-Care Centers, and other Program Policies and Procedures. Prepares developmentally appropriate materials and arranges a physical environment to meet the needs of infants and toddlers.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as the primary provider for the children.
  • Designs and incorporates the Head Start content areas of health, nutrition and parent involvement.
  • Plans and implements a program geared specifically for infants and toddlers, including modeling desired behavior by all classroom staff in accordance with program standards and other requirements.
  • Uses the appropriate skills to meet social, emotional, physical and developmental needs of individual infants and toddlers.
  • Participates in planning, assessing and evaluation of program content plans.
  • Conducts home visits as required with appropriate records of contact.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of resource materials.
  • Supervises and guides children during mealtimes, toileting, hand washing, rest periods and play activities.
  • Participates in all staff development activities, in-service trainings, workshops, and meetings.
  • Provides daily interaction and supervision to the children in care.
  • Provides a developmentally appropriate environment conducive to learning and maintains a clean, safe, and healthy environment for children.
  • Maintains open and frequent communication with parents regarding their child’s progress and program activities.
  • Administers, interprets, and utilizes the results of assessments and/or screenings for planning and delivering individualized instruction.
  • Collaborates with other staff to utilize assessment data to organize small groups and individualized instruction.
  • Prepares and submits administrative reports as scheduled, including form 1535 from USDA food program.
  • Attends and participates in ECI meetings when applicable.
  • Implements child’s plan for children with special needs and maintains accurate documentation on the children in their care.
  • Provides opportunities for Family Style Service during meal times, as applicable.
  • Plans and conducts Parent/Teacher conferences as needed and assists in planning and attending monthly parent committee meetings.
  • Assists in recruiting children for the program and attends training workshops as assigned by the Director of EHS Services and/or the EHS Campus Director.
  • Adheres to the Confidentiality Policy of the Program and reports all suspected cases of child abuse/neglect to the proper authorities immediately.
  • Attends First Aid and CPR and any other training as required to comply with Texas Child Care Minimum Standards and Performance Standards.
  • Adheres to Hidalgo County Head Start Policies and Procedures as required and to the requirements of the Texas Education Agency.
  • Will be subject to re-assignment from one campus to another as needed and collaborates with the local Independent School District personnel to provide high-quality education and comprehensive services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or Executive Director.
Qualifications
  • Must have a minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent with a current Infant/Toddler Child Development Associates (CDA). Current certification in First Aid and CPR must be maintained.
  • Must have sufficient knowledge of early child development to perform work assigned.
  • Must be Bilingual (English/Spanish proficient).
  • Must have an automobile and current liability insurance as required for work related travel.
  • Applicant is required to provide copies of diplomas, certificates of achievements, or other teaching credentials with the application.
