Position: 2026-27 Teacher, RDSPD Oral Deaf Education
PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provide Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) services to Oral DHH students that need daily support from a certified Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TODHH). Specialized techniques, such as speech reading, natural gestures, and visual cues, along with amplification will teach students to maximize the use of residual hearing; leading to students' ability to develop English linguistics and language acquisition.

Sign language is not used in this approach to develop English proficiency; a highly qualified TODHH specializing in Aural-Oral Deaf Education will guide students in developing reading and writing skills. Facilitate the educational progress of students based on their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Collect and analyze multiple sources of data to provide input on progress regarding the general education.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited university, required
  • Valid Texas Teacher Certification, required
  • Valid Texas Deaf and Hard of Hearing Certification, with required endorsements for subject/level assigned or other permits as approved by state, required
  • Valid Listening and Speaking Language Specialist Certification (LSLS), preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to work with DHH students
  • Knowledge of auditory training.
  • Knowledge of Oral/Aural Strategies.
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and IEP goal setting process and implementation.
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
Experience:

3 years' experience in working with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, required

1 year experience working with Oral DHH students, preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Strategies
  • Plan, develop, and implement an instructional program for each student based upon individual need; maintains documentation of teacher planning and student learning on a timely basis.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Participate in ARD committee meetings for students in the RDSPD.
  • Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan for instructional activities.
  • Uses the standard-based curriculum for lesson planning and develops lessons, which meet student needs.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
  • Use technology in the teaching/learning process.
  • Student Growth and Development
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Act a positive role model for students; support the mission of the district.
  • Classroom Management
  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Implement classroom management strategies, which support student centered learning.
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Ensure paperwork and IEP supporting documentation are completed in a timely manner and using the electronic IEP system.

  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
