Position: 2026-27 Counselor, Lead

Lead Counselor (2026‑27)

PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

To supervise, manage and lead a comprehensive program of guidance and counseling utilizing planning, implementation and evaluation that includes counseling services to assigned school; uses a planning process to define needs and priorities of population served; provides a proactive, developmental guidance program for all students to maximize personal growth and development; coordinates post‑secondary education, college admissions, financial aid and scholarships; promotes a positive working relationship among and between staff by establishing a climate conducive to open communication and productive work.

Qualifications
  • Education/Certification: Master's Degree (required), Texas Counselor’s Certificate (required), Texas Teaching Certificate (required)
  • Special Knowledge/

    Skills:

    Knowledge of counseling procedures; effective verbal and written communication; interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills; ability to work collaboratively with building and district staff; proficiency interpreting data, federal and state laws and policies.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience as a classroom teacher; high‑school teaching experience and counseling experience (required).
  • Days: 207 per year.
  • Note: Starting pay will be determined individually based on job‑related experience.
Major Responsibilities and Duties / Essential Functions
  • Plan and implement the school’s developmental guidance and counseling program consistent with district and campus goals.
  • Provide guidance and counseling to individual students and groups.
  • Provide crisis counseling and/or consultation services.
  • Teach the school developmental guidance curriculum in conjunction with teachers or through individual and classroom group activities.
  • Provide academic and career counseling through course advisement and selection.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress; coordinate with staff in selection and development of college admissions, financial aid, scholarships and career guidance materials.
  • Coordinate and participate in special events, projects and programs designed to enhance student success.
  • Consult with parents, administrators, school personnel or students about educational, personal and social needs through conferences, phone calls and home visits.
  • Use an effective referral process to work cooperatively with school, community and resource persons.
  • Assist administrators, teachers, students and parents in the resolution of conflicts.
  • Advocate for the guidance and counseling program and staff with school, district and community.
  • Accomplish tasks to help staff organize for program delivery and define staff member roles.
  • Collaborate with other school and district staff to interpret testing programs for students.
  • Plan and provide professional development for staff when appropriate.
  • Promote equal access to all career/technical programs and activities for all students.
  • Work cooperatively with students, parents and school staff to achieve a positive school climate and community relations.
  • Foster collaborative educational efforts among staff by supporting the district’s philosophy and mission.
  • Keep the principal informed regarding the status of all projects or initiatives undertaken.
  • Obtain, manage and distribute information about college, scholarships and career guidance.
  • Compile and maintain all reports, records and other required documents.
  • Prepare the department budget request and recommend purchase of supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Pursue professional growth by participating in in‑service opportunities and staying abreast of changes and developments in education.
  • Use accepted theories and techniques appropriate to school counseling.
  • Adhere to ethical and legal standards.
  • Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
  • Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities

    None.

    Equipment Used

    Computer, copier, multimedia equipment.

    Working Conditions

    Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; coordinate multiple projects; meet deadlines.

    Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent prolonged and irregular hours; frequent district‑wide and occasional state or national travel; assisting in restraining students in a crisis situation.

    Salary

    $332.86 to $464.40 per year.
