General Statement of JobThe Student Learning Assistant provides academic learning support for students as directed, including tutoring students, conducting supplemental instruction, and performing other learning support duties, and assisting with the daily operations of the college's learning centers.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities- Provides educational assistance to students in specific discipline to improve understanding and comprehension of the subject.
- Leads efforts to prepare student-directed workshops and materials to enhance student comprehension and supplement course assignments.
- Attends classes and/or holds study sessions for student participation as required.
- Integrates study strategy techniques with the course content.
- Provides individual and group instruction to students on a variety of subjects using a distance learning format.
- Attends lectures and functions as a model student in the programmatic framework.
- Develops and maintains working relationships with the course content instructor, student participants, and appropriate supervisor.
- Keeps regular and accurate records using required software, related forms and submits appropriate paperwork in a timely manner.
- Engages in the promotion and presentation of information about academic support services and resources at the Centers for Learning Excellence.
- Assists in serving as a Centers for Learning Excellence liaison with faculty and staff in the interest of student success as directed by supervisor.
- Participates in required departmental training, workshops and meetings, conducting routine trainings as needed.
- Supervises part-time staff, as needed.
- Travels throughout the college district, as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- To qualify, one of the following must be met:
- Associate's degree
- A minimum of 60 earned college hours
- Must have completed 12 college hours and demonstrated mastery in one or more of the following areas:
Information Technology or Computer Science required.
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
- Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret related professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Security Sensitive position:
All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy. - Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.
- College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification, preferred.
- Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
- Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
