People Operations Manager

Hey there — we're in need of a stellar People Operations Manager to join our team.

Are you a people person in every sense? Do you get as much satisfaction from a smooth payroll run as from helping a first-job teenager become a confident team member? And are you ready to embark on a career devoted to the pursuit of fun? If so, read on and see how we roll.

Flamingo Bowl is the only McAllen bowling, arcade, food and event destination — 40 lanes, modern amenities, and a team devoted to the pursuit of fun. No day is the same and there's never a dull moment!

The People Operations Manager is the champion of our most important asset — our team. Part recruiter, part coach, and part guardian of the rulebook, this person owns the entire employee experience across every department in the building: front desk, lanes, game room, kitchen, bar, and events. As our first dedicated people role, you'll build it your way — with the full backing of the General Manager.

The People Operations Manager owns hiring, onboarding, payroll administration, compliance, and employee relations for Flamingo Bowl. This role keeps every department staffed ahead of our busy seasons, gives every new hire an organized and welcoming first week, keeps payroll, certifications, and personnel files audit-ready, and serves as the trusted first stop when a team member needs help. The People Operations Manager reports directly to the General Manager and provides leadership in support of Flamingo Bowl's mission and values.

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Own recruiting and hiring for hourly and supervisory roles — write postings, screen applicants, coordinate interviews, and keep a bench of great candidates ready for peak seasons
  • Build and run onboarding and training coordination so every new hire's first week is organized, welcoming, and consistent across departments
  • Administer payroll processing, timekeeping, and benefits enrollment accurately and on schedule, partnering with our payroll provider and the General Manager
  • Ensure compliance with Texas and federal employment law, minor work rules for our younger team members, and tracking of TABC and food handler certifications for bar and kitchen staff
  • Serve as the trusted first stop for employee relations — hear concerns, investigate fairly, document properly, and coach managers through tough conversations
  • Maintain personnel files, the employee handbook, and HR policies — and modernize them where needed
  • Champion recognition, retention, and team culture so Flamingo Bowl stays a place people love to work, not just visit
  • Other duties may be assigned

The People Operations Manager possesses a highly developed sense of customer service and interpersonal skills including high integrity, respect for all individuals (customers, vendors, and employees), solid communication skills, strong critical and analytical thinking skills, and appreciation of diversity. Discretion and sound judgment are essential — this role handles confidential information daily. Working knowledge of payroll or HRIS systems; experience utilizing word-processing, spreadsheets, internet and related PC based systems required.

Bilingual English/Spanish strongly valued in our market

Experience in hospitality, restaurants, retail, or entertainment — anywhere with hourly teams, high seasonality, and nights-and-weekends scheduling

PHR, SHRM-CP, or similar certification

Experience building HR processes from scratch at a small business

Minimum of two years of hands-on HR experience (generalist, coordinator, or people operations) covering at least hiring, payroll support, and employee relations, with working knowledge of federal and Texas employment law basics — wage and hour, I-9s, workplace safety, and employment of minors. Relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is also acceptable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and use hands. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds (event setup, supply runs).

Office and floor time in a bowling center environment where high levels of noise and activity can be expected when outside the office. Schedule is primarily weekday daytime hours — a rarity in our industry — with occasional evening or weekend presence for hiring events and team activities. Part-time preferred; open to a full-time or hybrid arrangement for the right person (pay pro-rated accordingly).
