The Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning Mechanic installs, services and repairs environmental-control systems in residences, department stores, office buildings, and other commercial establishments. This includes applying knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipe fitting and structural layout; mounting compressor and condenser units on a platform or floor; fabricating, assembling and installing ductwork and chassis parts; using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment; installing evaporator units in chassis or air-duct systems;

cutting and bending tubing to length; threading pipes; joining tubing or pipes to refrigerating units; soldering joints; forming complete refrigerant circuits; and installing expansion and discharge valves in circuits.

This worker connects motors, compressors, temperature and humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and power sources; installs air and water filters; tests systems and injects refrigerant to test pressures. The technician observes gauges, tests joints for gas leaks, wraps pipes in insulation, and replaces defective controls and wiring to repair installed units. Experience may include air conditioning systems ranging from fifteen to twenty tons cooling capacity in warehouses and small factory buildings.

All HVAC personnel designated to work on, operate, maintain, and/or repair HVAC equipment or systems shall maintain a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education annually from a NATE, HVAC Excellence, or UA Star recognized provider program.

All HVAC personnel designated to work on, operate, maintain, and/or repair HVAC equipment or systems shall possess one or more of the following certifications:

Pay Rate: $33.78 per hour

Hourly Fringe: $7.47 per hour

Hourly Pension Contribution: $3.02 per hour

A background check and drug screen will be conducted for this position.
