Description
The purpose of this position is to perform skilled work to inspect, test, maintain, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and specialized and emergency supplies, materials, and equipment.

Examples of Duties
  • Performs tests and inspections of vehicles in accordance with federal guidelines; tests equipment to check for malfunctions and determine corrective measures to be applied; utilizes diagnostic equipment; determines whether to remove unit from service for repair or replacement; and maintains required documentation.
  • Performs preventive maintenance; develops preventive maintenance schedules; performs maintenance activities which may include checking/replacing fluid levels, changing/replacing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, installing/replacing blades, replacing belts/hoses, checking batteries, calibrating equipment, and performing tune-ups; and maintains related documentation.
  • Performs repairs on vehicles; troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, and/or other defects; gathers information from vehicle operator reports, fault codes, and other diagnostic data; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems; identifies items needing repair; fabricates parts as needed; completes required repairs; verifies parts operate according to specifications; and ensures vehicle operation and performance is within specified limits; makes repairs in the field so the vehicle can get back to the shop;

    performs minor body repairs; analyzes and determines costs of vehicle specifications, repairs, and parts.
  • Performs welding/fabrication work associated with general repair and maintenance of equipment; welds metal parts together; repairs broken or cracked parts; fills holes; and fabricates special parts; demonstrates proficiency in painting and body work of vehicles.
  • Overhauls diesel engines, maintains diesel components, assemblies used in diesel-powered vehicles; services Hydraulic pumps; replaces Hydraulic lines, Cylinders, Overhaul Transmissions, and diesel fuel systems; aligns wheels, adjusts tracks, and repairs steering equipment; relines and adjusts brakes.
  • Maintains inventories of supplies, forms, and equipment; ensures availability of adequate supplies to complete work activities; prepares purchase requisitions for needed materials, equipment, and supplies; communicates with vendors regarding tools, parts, and components; and receives and stores incoming supply shipments.
  • Ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; trains assigned personnel in the performance of assigned vehicles; transmits orders to other mechanics as needed.
  • Overhauls, repairs, and maintains engines, motors, motor-powered equipment, component assemblies, and construction and special purpose equipment powered by internal combustion engines.
  • Maintains brake systems, transmissions, ignition systems, rear ends, differential assemblies, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, electronic systems, and other related components; maintains wheels and alignment; repairs steering equipment; relines and adjust brakes and clutches.
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated time frames, and per established procedures; receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.
  • Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing Identifix, Mitchells, All Data, Google Docs, Microsoft Outlook, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Operates or uses various machinery equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments; operates and maintains basic mechanics tool kit and other equipment; and performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks on equipment and work areas.
  • Communicates with supervisor, other County employees, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and three (3) years of related experience in automotive maintenance and repair, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate's Degree in Automotive Repair or related field preferred.
