Position

The Nexus Water Group team has an opportunity for a Field Tech I. Responsible for accurate and timely reading and recording of water meters to facilitate customer billing, identifying meter equipment problems, and performing minor meter/system maintenance.

Work Location and Schedule

This position will travel between service areas near Mchenry, IL
. Schedule is Monday through Friday. After-hours and weekend on-call support may be required. Availability for shift work and weekend scheduling may be required.

What You’ll Do
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Document customer interaction and field activities in CC&B.
  • Act as liaison between customers and customer service for problem/complaint resolution.
  • Respond to customer inquiries regarding meter reading schedule, billing, how meters are read, and other customer service matters.
  • Provide on-site customer communication.
  • Assist with maintaining mechanical, electrical and piping systems for area water/wastewater facilities, collections and distribution systems.
  • Frequent, independent travel daily between worksites on company time.
  • On-Call in rotation as scheduled; respond to emergency situations as required.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform minor meter maintenance and repair duties
  • May walk 5–10 miles per day, reading between 200 and 1,200 meters per day and recording volume used by residential and commercial customers
  • Determine consistency of meter readings; report unusual water usage to supervisor
  • Inspect meters and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connections; ensure meters register properly; indicate irregularities on forms for service action
  • Turn off service for nonpayment of charges at vacant premises, or turn on for new occupants
  • Assist with ordering parts and job costing
  • Assist with installation and disconnection of water meters and sewer services
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Experience, Education & Certification
  • Requires at least 2 years of mechanical work experience
  • High school Diploma or GED
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license
Nice to Have
  • Water meter reading experience preferred
  • May be in process of obtaining Distribution and/or Collections Systems certificate or first-level plant operating license
Physical and Technical Skills
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical work, including lifting up to 75 lbs, walking 10+ miles daily, climbing and mechanical repair
  • Ability to read meters, charts and gauges and maintain records
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to review, classify, prioritize and analyze data
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for chemical dosing and flow rates
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers and regulatory agencies
  • Familiarity with MS Word, Excel and tablet/mobile devices; ability to learn internal software programs

  • Extreme physical demands, including lifting up to 75 lbs, walking 10+ miles daily, climbing and mechanical repair
