The School Bus Driver is a full-time, on-site role based in McHenry, IL, responsible for safely transporting students to and from school and school-related activities. Day-to-day duties include operating a school bus along assigned routes, following all traffic and safety laws, and maintaining a timely schedule. The driver assists students with boarding and exiting the bus, monitors passenger behavior to ensure a safe and respectful environment, and communicates clearly and professionally with students, staff, and families as needed.
The role also involves conducting pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, reporting any maintenance or safety concerns, and completing required documentation and training. The School Bus Driver represents the district in the community and is expected to uphold high standards of safety, courtesy, and reliability.
- Strong commercial vehicle operation skills, including Truck Driving experience and a valid CDL Class B (with appropriate school bus and passenger endorsements).
- Defensive Driving skills with a demonstrated commitment to safety, adherence to traffic laws, and careful operation in varied weather and road conditions.
- Effective Communication abilities to interact respectfully with students, families, school staff, and transportation personnel.
- Customer Service mindset focused on courtesy, patience, and professionalism when supporting students and responding to questions or concerns.
- Clean driving record and ability to pass required background checks, drug screenings, and physical examinations.
- Knowledge of basic vehicle safety checks and willingness to follow district transportation policies and procedures.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure, manage student behavior appropriately, and respond to emergencies following established protocols.
- Previous school bus or passenger transport experience is preferred; high school diploma or equivalent is beneficial.
