Job DescriptionThe Security Guard is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors throughout McKeesport Area School District buildings and grounds. This position monitors building access, supports emergency preparedness, and assists administration in enforcing district policies and procedures related to safety and student conduct.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Monitor and control entry points, verifying identification of visitors, staff, and students in accordance with district visitor management procedures.
- Patrol school buildings, grounds, parking lots, and surrounding areas to detect and prevent unsafe or unauthorized activity.
- Monitor security cameras, alarm systems, and access control systems; report malfunctions promptly.
- Respond to incidents of misconduct, altercations, or safety concerns; de-escalate situations calmly and professionally, notifying administration as needed.
- Assist with the supervision of students during arrival, dismissal, hallway transitions, lunch periods, and school events (athletics, concerts, assemblies, etc.).
- Support emergency preparedness efforts, including fire drills, lockdown drills, and other emergency response procedures.
- Maintain accurate logs and written incident reports; communicate relevant information to administration and, when appropriate, law enforcement.
- Collaborate with building administrators, teachers, and support staff to foster a positive and secure school climate.
- Enforce district policies regarding trespassing, weapons, and other prohibited items or behaviors.
- Assist with traffic and pedestrian safety during arrival/dismissal and special events.
- Respond to medical, weather, or safety emergencies following district protocols.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or Director of Safety & Security.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- Prior experience in security, law enforcement, corrections, military service, or a related field preferred.
- Ability to interact effectively and appropriately with children and adolescents.
- Strong communication, observation, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in high-stress or emergency situations.
- Ability to stand, walk, and patrol facilities for extended periods, including stair use and outdoor patrol in all weather conditions.
Per Pennsylvania School Code, candidates must obtain and maintain:
- PA Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 151)
- PA State Police Criminal Record Check (Act 34)
- FBI Criminal Background Check / Fingerprinting (Act 114)
- Act 24 Arrest/Conviction Report & Certification
- Act 168 Sexual Misconduct/Abuse Disclosure Release
- Mandated Reporter Training
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Valid PA driver's license (if applicable to role)
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; climb stairs; respond quickly to emergency situations; occasionally lift/move up to 25 lbs.; work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
