Responsibilities

  • Layout of borings and test pits using conventional surveying and Global Positioning Systems (GPS); observe and classify test pits and soils.
  • Perform hand auger borings, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing, soil logging, and other geotechnical field work.
  • Classify samples from drilling operations and reduce GPS and other geotechnical data for production.
  • Assist with department administrative duties and work in the construction materials testing department as required.
  • Work primarily on active construction sites, performing field observation, testing, sampling, and inspection of soil, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement (not all disciplines may be encountered on every project).
  • Under the direction of staff professionals or project managers, perform routine field and laboratory tests and assist with more complex tasks as needed.
  • Calculate and reduce data from test results and draft reports as required.
  • Communicate daily with site contractors, technicians, and project managers.
Work Environment

Employees will be regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet, humid, extreme cold, or heat, dusty and noisy work environments. Noise levels will typically be moderate to moderately loud. Employees may be exposed to high, precarious places. Some weekend and overtime work may be required; overnight travel may also be required.

Physical Requirements

Employees must be able to use their hands to handle, feel, reach, climb, balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel, sit, see, and smell, including close, distance, and peripheral vision. Employees may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day. Regular lifting and movement up to 40 pounds, frequent lifting and movement up to 60–80 pounds, and occasional lifting of more than 100 pounds are required.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED; BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited university preferred.
  • 0–2 years of experience.
  • Ability to carry 40–70 pounds multiple times a day or occasionally lift 85 pounds to waist height.
Military Qualifications
  • U.S. military personnel holding the rank of E-4 who meet the education requirements above are eligible.
