Position

Summary

Under general supervision by the Chief Building Inspectors, the purpose of this position is to ensure compliance with the International Code Council (ICC) Building Codes and City ordinances. Employees perform skilled‑level work by inspecting and certifying new, existing, and altered buildings and structures, and they may perform related duties as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Inspect new and existing residential, commercial, multi‑family, and other buildings and structures for critical life safety standards.
  • Verify conformance with adopted International Codes, construction documents, and the city’s code of ordinances.
  • Operate a city vehicle safely to all inspection sites.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, homeowners, developers, designers, and the public regarding inspection requirements.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes.
  • Manage time, plan routes, and execute assigned inspections independently.
  • Document inspection results accurately into the computer database.
  • Use common software applications and the inspection database on tablet and laptop.
  • Respond to phone calls and construction complaints from citizens and building professionals.
  • Comply with city and department policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedules and attendance policies.
  • Participate in special team projects.
  • Achieve ICC certification in either residential or commercial building within six months of employment.
  • Lead department training periodically.
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Manage a variable, often heavy workload to complete 100% of assigned inspections each day.
  • Determine if construction work may be covered and if construction can move forward.
  • Perform related work as required.
