SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under general supervision by the Chief Building Inspectors, this position ensures compliance with the ICC Building Codes and City Ordinances. Employees in this classification perform skilled-level work, inspecting and certifying new, existing, and altered buildings and structures. The role also performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Inspects new and existing residential, commercial, multi‑family, and other buildings for critical life‑safety standards.
- Uses knowledge from study and training to verify conformance with adopted International Codes, construction documents, and the City’s Code of Ordinances.
- Safely drives a City vehicle to all assigned inspection sites.
- Communicates effectively with contractors, homeowners, developers, designers, and the general public regarding inspection requirements.
- Demonstrates proficiency in building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes.
- Works independently to manage time, plan routes, and execute inspections.
- Documents inspection results thoroughly, accurately, and precisely in the computer database.
- Utilizes common software applications and the inspection database on a tablet and laptop computer.
- Responds to phone calls from citizens and building professionals regarding inspections.
- Investigates and responds to construction complaints from the general public.
- Complies with all written City and department policies and procedures.
- Adheres to safety standards, reporting incidents promptly.
- Follows the City’s attendance and work‑schedule policies.
- Participates in special team projects.
- Achieves ICC certification in either residential or commercial building within six months of employment.
- Periodically leads department training.
- Works outdoors in inclement weather, including extreme heat and cold.
- Manages a variable and often heavy workload to complete 100% of assigned inspections each day.
- Determines if construction work may be covered and if it can proceed.
- Performs related work as required.

- Applies rational systems, interprets written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled instructions, and exercises independent judgment.
- Exercises judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in varied and frequently changing duties.
- Performs coordinated movements, such as climbing, walking over uneven surfaces, and operating tools.
- Meets City driving standards and passes a background check and drug screen.
- Works in a team environment, treating co‑workers and customers with respect.
- Builds professional relationships with internal staff and customers.
- Offers flexibility and adaptability during times of change.
- Communicates effectively in written and oral forms.
- Reviews and interprets construction plans and architectural/engineering drawings to enforce applicable codes.
- Compares plans to existing conditions to determine deviations.
- Recognizes when permits or additional review are required.
High school diploma or GED. Two (2) years previous related experience with training in the construction field. ICC Residential or Commercial Building Inspector certification is preferred or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
