The Career Planning Specialist plays a critical role in onboarding prospective students and supporting them throughout each stage of their career development  leveraging tools such as assessments, workshops, and informational resources, this position helps students make informed decisions about their academic paths and career goals. The specialist empowers students to better understand their strengths, interests, and opportunities, guiding them toward majors and career options that align with their personal and professional aspirations.

  • Guide, advise, and support students throughout the career planning, decision-making, and job search processes.
  • Utilize assessment tools to help students identify their interests and skills, select a major, determine career pathways, establish goals, and persist to graduation.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student interactions and program activities.
  • Deliver services that help students connect academic coursework to career opportunities.
  • Participate in Summer Orientation and Preview Day by presenting career planning information to students and parents.
  • Support outreach efforts by promoting job opportunities to diverse TJC student populations.

If travel is required, the candidate must have and maintain a current, valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field

Required Experience

One year of experience working with students

Preferred Experience
  • Knowledge of FERPA and higher education regulations.
  • Experience in career counseling.
Additional Job-Specific Requirements
  • Understanding of the higher education student services experience and how to best assist students with identifying and aligning self-awareness aspects and goals with college and career options.
  • Skills using technology and resources that assist students with the development of self-awareness and knowledge of occupational data resources, including but not limited to the usage of email, text, internet, Microsoft Office Suite, and career assessment platforms.
  • Ability to contribute to a student-focused team culture that delivers excellent customer service while building positive professional partnerships with students, parents, and community members.
