Location: McKinney, Texas (Onsite)

Overview

The Failure Analysis Lab (FAL) at Raytheon in McKinney, Texas supports Raytheon programs, suppliers, and end users by investigating failure events and providing analytical services. The role is part of the Failure Analysis Team responsible for root‑cause failure analysis of Raytheon products including components, mechanical assemblies, systems, and manufacturing materials.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) operator, performing detailed materials analysis such as metallurgical evaluations, fracture analysis, tensile and peel strength testing, hardness, and fatigue testing.
  • Operate and maintain analytical tools including SEM, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS), universal testing machines (e.g., Instron), thermal analysis tools, optical microscopes, and focused ion beam (FIB) equipment.
  • Prepare formal analysis reports to substantiate failure conclusions and recommend solutions to programs.
  • Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team with senior engineers and provide oversight support as needed.
  • Maintain laboratory tools, conduct audit preparations, and ensure compliance with relevant industry standards.
Required Qualifications
  • BS in Materials Science or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience, or an advanced degree with appropriate experience.
  • Proven knowledge of laboratory analytical tools such as SEM, EDS/WDS, universal testing machines, thermal analysis tools, optical microscopes, and FIB.
  • Ability to independently author technical reports and deliver presentations to key stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with excellent interpersonal abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Materials Science or a related engineering field.
  • Experience with sample preparation techniques and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Familiarity with CAD design tools such as SOLIDWORKS, Catia, or PTC Creo.
  • Experience with data collection and analysis tools such as MATLAB, Mathcad, or similar.
  • Experience in image processing using machine learning and automated recognition techniques.
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis (e.g., ANSYS, ABAQUS) and in‑situ experimentation methods in SEM.
  • Laboratory experience assessing mechanical properties of materials such as tensile strength, shear strength, fatigue life, and dielectric strength.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving skills in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment; strong customer interaction and leadership abilities.
