Position: Deputy City Marshal

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the position performs a wide variety of law enforcement activities, including collecting and dispensing information, arbitrating disputes, apprehending people with warrants, transporting prisoners, parking enforcement, and court security. Duties involve personal danger and require independent judgment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Complies with all city policies and procedures, including those defined in the City of McKinney Employee Handbook.
  • Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in city and department attendance policies and procedures.
  • Drives to and from locations as assigned.
  • Provides assistance and service to the public, i.e. changing tires.
  • Exercises independent judgement when determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree.
  • Performs law enforcement functions as needed: prevents/discovers commission of crime; checks suspicious buildings, vehicles, persons, or situations; maintains high visibility in the community; issues citations; pursues suspects, apprehends/restrains suspects/criminals, and advises suspects of their rights; responds to fleet accidents, enforces vehicle operating laws, parking laws, checks vehicle insurance, vehicle registrations, vehicle license tags, or vehicle identification numbers; serves arrest warrants, subpoenas, summons or other documentation as needed;

    provides traffic control, crowd control, police protection, or security escorts as appropriate; transports arrestees, victims, witnesses, members of the public, or other individuals as required.
  • Enforces State and local traffic laws to ensure safety.
  • Identifies and issues municipal citations to violators of misdemeanor offenses.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills in court.
  • Performs considerable reporting and record maintenance duties, i.e. arrest reports, warrant research and dispositions.
  • Attends in-service training as directed to maintain current knowledge of changes in laws, new methods of enforcement, and other trends and developments in law enforcement.
  • Reads, writes, and comprehends legal and non-legal documents in English, prepares and processes required reports, citations, affidavits, warrants and supplemental documents.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisors, peers, civilian employees, groups, and citizens.
  • Pursues fleeing suspects and performs rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting law enforcement vehicles.
  • Performs searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, walking, or standing for long periods of time.
  • Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile views and opinions of suspects and other people encountered while on duty.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with other City department personnel.
  • Performs rescue functions at emergencies and disasters to include directing traffic for long periods of time, in all types of weather conditions, and administering emergency medical aid. May assist Fire Department personnel at the scene as directed.
  • Prepares and issues warrant notifications by mail, in person and by phone.
  • Clear warrants from court and regional computer system.
  • Serves warrants and arrests citizens who fail to comply.
  • Serves as bailiff in court room; coordinates and secures safety and security in court room.
  • Transports prisoners from other jurisdictions.
  • Conducts weekend prisoner transports on a rotating schedule.
  • Submits files to Judges and prosecutors for review.
  • Contact other agencies regarding arrested subjects.
  • Research information for city prosecutor.
  • Responsible for compliance checks of vehicle registrations and misc. vehicle equipment.
  • Serves as liaison between the court and outside law enforcement agencies.
  • Verifies prisoner status for possible release; authorizes release of prisoners.
  • Responsible for verifying and processing time served requests from jail.
  • Serves court summons/subpoenas.
  • Files charges against defendants as requested by Judge or prosecutor.
