Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of law enforcement activities. Employees in this classification perform skilled level work. This position is responsible for tasks that are service oriented, and include collecting and dispensing information, arbitrating disputes, apprehending people with warrants, transporting prisoners, parking enforcement, and court security. Duties include an element of personal danger, i.e. exposure to life-threatening circumstances.

Incumbents perform duties in accordance with State Statutes and established department policies, procedures, and guidelines. The incumbent must be able to act without close supervision and must be able to exercise independent judgement. Performs related work as required.

Requires public speaking ability in order to inform court attendees of municipal court protocol. Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments. Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information, such as the Penal Code, traffic and criminal law guidelines, computer documentation, and the city code and ordinances.

Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; ability to utilize principles of fractions; ability to interpret graphs. Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change. Requires the ability to perform skilled coordinated movements, such as utilizing a firearm and handcuffs, operating a police vehicle, and operating office machinery and a computer.
