Under general supervision, performs technical tasks in operation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection system. Employees in this classification perform technical, manual work, responsible for repairing water leaks, installing and repairing sewer and water mains, and operating and maintaining moderate to complex equipment.

- Conduct basic supervised water inspection, installation and repair of water mains, water services, water meters, hydrants, and valves.
- Assist preparing work areas and securing job sites by setting up cones, barricades, and other traffic control devices.
- Assist in preparing tools, materials, and equipment necessary for various job assignments.
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and tools by cleaning and servicing regularly.
- Flush hydrants.
- Track water loss.
- Identify basic common water parts.
- Operate valves and operate valve turner.
- Conduct safety inspections and complete check-off sheets and equipment.
- Serve on callout crew, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

- Locate and follow McKinney Public Works Standard Operating Procedures.
- Learn the current Work Order System.
- Perform basic math operations and interpret graphs.
- Execute written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions with some independence.
- Exercise judgment in repetitive or short-cycle operations.
- Perform coordinated movements involving placing and turning motions, such as operating a backhoe, hydro‑excavator, dump truck and trailer, front‑end loader, air compressor, gas and electrical pumps, and various hand tools.
- Work in a team environment; treat co‑workers, subordinates, and customers with respect.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any work‑related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels may substitute for the specified education and experience. High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by previous experience and/or training involving water construction, maintenance and repair work, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
