Position: Transportation Maint Tech I / II / III - Collin Co. Maintenance Office

Job Overview

Transportation Maintenance Technician I, II or III performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergency situations. The role requires contact with private entities and follows standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties
  • Determine placement of traffic control devices and install or move devices.
  • Inspect barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintain picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
  • Perform mowing of rights‑of‑way and picnic and rest areas; conduct plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Assist in inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Perform all other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties for Tech II and Tech III
  • Inspect routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Inspect materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
  • Work on a survey crew and operate survey instruments such as theodolite, transit, level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.
  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Train other employees.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

No education required.

  • Transportation Maintenance Technician I:
    No experience required.
  • Transportation Maintenance Technician II: 1 year experience.
  • Transportation Maintenance Technician III: 2 years experience.
  • Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work. Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may substitute for experience on a year‐per‐year basis.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license at the time of application and a Commercial Class A Driver’s License with an N endorsement or obtain a CDL A license within 120 days of employment.
  • Military or Veterans:
    Candidates with a US Military CDL equivalent must obtain a Texas Class A CDL within 120 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Class A CDL (no restrictions).
  • Background in roadway maintenance.
  • Experience operating light or heavy equipment.
Competencies
  • Use of hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Operation of light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Maintaining a safe working relationship with others.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance, and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
  • Use of computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Balance, walk, stand, and crouch on various surfaces without falling.
  • Reach and extend hands and arms in any direction.
  • Visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Subject to extreme heat and cold: below 32°F and above 100°F for longer than an hour.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs.
Conditions of Employment
  • Physically demanding; requires a pre‑employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment; this position is a Safety Impact position subject to random drug testing. Medical marijuana is not a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test.
  • Report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations (one‑week rotations).
  • Required to work during inclement weather, weekends, holidays, and outside 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. hours.
