Under direct supervision of the Streets Supervisor, the purpose of this position is to perform general repair and maintenance of streets, drainage systems, signs, and signals. Employees in this classification perform manual level work. This position is responsible for assisting in the preparation of work areas, tools, equipment, and may perform other related functions as assigned.

Essential duties and responsibilities include participating in all phases of streets, gutter drainage and alley repair and construction, assisting in preparing work areas and securing job sites, performing preventative maintenance on equipment and tools, making repairs in pavement, curb, gutter and sidewalk, operating equipment, maintaining operational records, responding to emergency situations, participating in establishing traffic control devices, guiding traffic flow at work sites, assisting with setup, teardown, and clean up of special events and meetings, conducting safety inspections, and complying with assigned work schedules.

If assigned to asphalt, duties include assisting with crack seal operations, asphalt finishing hand tools, filling potholes with hot mix asphalt, and pavement reconstruction and repairs. If assigned to concrete, duties include setting up forms and rebar, assisting crew members with small hand tools. If assigned to drainage, duties include assisting with shooting elevations, setting up forms and rebar, assisting crew members with small hand tools, and carrying small debris from areas like creeks and lakes.

Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information, such as equipment manuals, city policy manuals and line locators. Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action. Ability to exercise the judgment required in situations characterized by repetitive short cycle operations covered by set procedures or consequences. Ability to perform coordinated movements involving placing and turning motions, such as operating back hoes, motor graders, box blades, rollers, etc.

Additionally, requires the ability to utilize shovels, asphalt rakes, laser instruments and street saws. Ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers, subordinates, and customers with respect. Ability to build professional relationships with internal staff and customers. Ability to offer flexibility and adaptability, especially during times of change. Ability to learn the current work order system.
