About the OrganizationThe Samaritan Inn was founded in 1984 as a 10‑bed single men’s homeless shelter. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest shelters for our unhoused neighbors in North Texas. We serve single men, women, and families, with the capacity to serve up to 226 residents. We ensure housing stability through prevention, access, and comprehensive support, affirming dignity, strengthening independence, and cultivating a community rooted in care.
Summaryof the Job
The Counselor provides mental health counseling and support services to homeless residents through individualized treatment plans, with a focus on emotional well‑being, goal‑setting, and long‑term stability. The role fosters therapeutic relationships and utilizes clinical expertise to promote positive change and reduce recidivism.
Essential Functions- Provide individual, couples, group, and crisis counseling to address emotional and social concerns.
- Develop and implement treatment plans tailored to each resident’s needs and clinical presentation.
- Build and maintain effective therapeutic relationships; terminate services appropriately based on clinical progress.
- Collaborate with community service providers for coordinated care and resource referrals.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential client records in accordance with agency standards.
- Refer residents to appropriate external resources or specialists when needed.
- Submit required reports and documentation as directed.
- Attend and contribute to weekly clinical meetings and interdisciplinary case consultations.
- Uphold the highest standards of professional ethics and maintain healthy boundaries with all residents.
- Master’s degree in counseling, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work.
- Eligible for permanent professional licensure in the State of Texas (e.g., LPC-Associate, LMSW, or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of homelessness and its contributing factors.
- Prior experience working in a nonprofit, shelter, or social service environment.
- Strong problem‑solving and reflective listening abilities.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional ethical standards.
- Receptivity to clinical supervision and feedback.
- Adaptability in high‑demands, fast‑paced settings.
- Ability to identify and respond to crisis and stress indicators in self and others.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- General proficiency with computers and client management systems.

Work Environment- Work is performed in an office and shelter setting.
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs and ramps multiple times daily using feet and legs; arms and hands may assist with balance.
