Role Overview
Card Vertical Risk Manager (VRM) role supports Card Data leadership in controls oversight & innovation, script governance, and feature governance. The Card Risk role supports the Card Data Now team within Card Data Models Decisioning and Credit (DMDC). Principal Risk Specialists at Capital One are highly motivated risk‑management professionals with excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, acting as change agents to influence business partners.
As Capital One evolves to meet an ever‑changing technology landscape, its Principal Risk Specialists adapt quickly, are technologically adept, and work across lines of business to manage risks within the Card business.
- Facilitating the risk assessment process associated with new or changing intent for multiple Card business areas
- Developing management reporting based on risk assessments
- Coordinating process interactions, including meeting logistics, and facilitating collaborative meetings with first- and second-line process participants
- Staying current on the changing regulatory environment and understanding its impacts on the business
- Partnering with data analysts to iterate and improve risk monitoring and reporting
- Synthesizing data and performing analysis to bring valuable business insights to the Card business
- Assessing controls and gleaning insights from issues and events across business areas
- Designing, implementing, or influencing internal governance processes
- Connecting the dots of changing strategic and operational priorities and risk environment, and partnering with risk advisors and business to understand impacts
- Providing strategic and tactical thought partnership to effectively drive project delivery
- Demonstrating outstanding communication and partnership skills essential for interacting with key stakeholders across all levels to manage, inform, and influence outcomes
- Supporting, partnering, and interacting with internal business clients in many forms such as advisor, project manager, or performer

- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certification
- At least 1 year of risk management and controls experience
- At least 1 year of experience reporting and analyzing data
- At least 1 year of experience developing presentations for senior stakeholders
- At least 2 years of project or process management experience
- At least 2 years of experience supporting, partnering, and interacting with internal business clients
- Bachelor's Degree or military experience
- 1+ years of experience facilitating and conducting risk assessments
- 3+ years of financial services or risk management experience
- 4+ years of project or process management experience
- 4+ years of experience supporting, partnering, and interacting with internal business clients
- Professional certifications within risk management or assurance (Certified Risk Management Professional, Certified Internal Auditor)
The minimum and maximum full‑time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations.
McLean, VA: $120,800–$137,900 (Principal Risk Specialist)
Richmond, VA: $109,900–$125,400 (Principal Risk Specialist)
Riverwoods, IL: $109,900–$125,400 (Principal Risk Specialist)
This role is also eligible to earn performance‑based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long‑term incentives (LTI).
