Overview

Medical Coding Trainer - Outpatient (Healthcare) — Part-Time position with Sierra
7. The role is to develop, deliver, and maintain high-quality training programs for VA medical coders and providers. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of VHA coding standards, compliance requirements, and industry best practices, with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, practical instruction. The role requires adaptability to business demands, which may require working outside standard hours.

Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver comprehensive training programs on ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and other coding systems.
  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications, procedures, as well as the principles and practices of health services and the organizational structure to ensure proper code selection.
  • Review clinical documentation and provide education to clinical staff on both inpatient and outpatient episodes of care including admissions and discharges, observation, emergency department/urgent care, and clinic visits.
  • Utilize identified trends to develop training materials, including presentations and e-learning modules.
  • Adhere to accepted coding practices, guidelines, and conventions when verifying the most appropriate diagnosis, operation, or procedure code to ensure ethical, accurate, and complete coding.
  • Monitor ever-changing regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information for the full spectrum of services provided by the VAMC.
  • Collaborate with leadership to identify skill gaps and create customized training plans.
  • Serve as a resource for coding questions and provide guidance on complex cases.
Qualifications
  • Experience as a medical coding trainer, with an emphasis on outpatient coding.
  • Deep understanding of VHA coding standards, compliance requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Ability to translate complex coding concepts into clear, practical instruction.
  • Flexibility to work outside standard hours as needed.
