Position OverviewThis role is a hybrid of infrastructure engineering and web application development focusing on the Backstage internal developer portal.
Backstage is an open-source tool used as a central portal for managing our AWS and EKS infrastructure. The role will consist of creating and maintaining Backstage plugins based on React which integrate with and orchestrate other backend systems as well as of maintaining Backstage itself.
Our ImpactAs the platform engineering team, we design and build the core platforms on which Freddie Mac s AWS based applications sit.
Your ImpactYou will be responsible for the internal developer portal used to orchestrate all levels of application infrastructure including:
- Developing and updating Backstage plugins for integration with other internal services using Type Script and React
- Maintaining and upgrading the Backstage core application including such configurations as SSL certificates and auth configuration
- Maintaining and updating the Backstage infrastructure using Cloud Formation
- Deployments of Freddie Mac developed Backstage plugins
- Enhancements of CICD for Backstage plugins
- Enhancements of Backstage monitoring and observability
- Bachelor s degree or equivalent experience; work towards advanced studies/degree preferred.
- Experience:
2 - 4 years related experience. - Experience managing or developing for Backstage internal developer portal
- Experience developing web applications using React and Typescript
- Experience integrating backend systems using HTTP APIs
- Experience using Cloud Formation to manage AWS infrastructure
- Experience with git-based software development practices
This role requires full stack knowledge from understanding EC2 to Linux to the Backstage application itself. It requires maintaining integrations with many backend systems as well as developing frontend UI plugins.
Success will require a wide breadth of knowledge as well as a focus on end user experience to ensure that Backstage provides a secure, stable, and easy to use platform for Freddie Mac developers to manage their application infrastructure.

This position has an annualized market-based salary range of $94,000 - $142,000 and is eligible to participate in the annual incentive program. The final salary offered will generally fall within this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to the responsibilities of the position, experience, skill set, internal pay equity and other relevant qualifications of the applicant.
