Senior Software Engineer - Database Platform

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Appian platform, your mission is to keep Appian fast, scalable, and adaptable to the tasks our customers configure it to do.

You will be solving problems of scale and flexibility that most engineers never see, building a product capable of serving our customers in ways you never imagined. Your scope extends from the high‑performance data layer to the cross‑platform user interface and the design tools used to create it.

To be successful in this role, you will:

• Respond to and resolve emergent problems, and write software and build automation to prevent recurrence.
• Leverage knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and design patterns to write software in a full‑stack Java & web technology environment.
• Utilize both object‑oriented and functional programming approaches in different technologies to implement features effectively.
• Radiate best practices and faster development based on relevant software development experience.
• Manage availability, latency, scalability, and efficiency by designing reliability into software and systems.
• Be a strong contributor to team feature breakdowns, sizing, and design of new feature implementations.
• Hold a high degree of personal responsibility for team performance, including quality, stability, and velocity.
• Identify opportunities for code refactoring and performance optimisations, and champion these efforts within the team.
• Communicate technical designs verbally and/or in writing for small to medium‑sized technical audiences.

Basic Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience building and delivering enterprise‑grade software applications.
• Tinkerer at heart with an innate ability to solve tough system problems.
• Fluency in Java, Hibernate, RDBMS, JDBC.
• Experience in CI/CD and cloud environments, such as AWS, and continuous integration systems, such as Jenkins.
• BE/B.Tech/BS in Computer Science or related technical discipline.
• Demonstrable understanding of systems, algorithms, and OO design or web API design.
• Strong contributor to breakdowns, sizing, and design of new feature implementations.
• Agile mindset with a focus on quality.

This role is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Employees are expected to work in the office five days a week.
