Director, Software Engineering (Network Platform Development)

As a Capital One Director of Software Engineering, you'll work on everything from customer-facing web and mobile applications using cutting‑edge open source frameworks, to highly‑available RESTful microservices, to back‑end Java based systems and machine‑learning models using the latest Big Data techniques. You'll bring solid experience in emerging and traditional technologies such as node.js, Java, GO, AngularJS, React, Python, REST, JSON, XML, Ruby, Perl, No

SQL databases, relational databases, Spark, Artifactory, Maven, iOS, Android, and AWS/Cloud Infrastructure.

The role will focus on Capital One network design and transformation, shifting the network infrastructure toward a proactive, intent‑based network architecture framework built on Infrastructure‑as‑Code principles. The leader will accelerate automation, AI integration, and engineering discipline maturity.

The director will build and scale a specialized team focused on automating a complex technology landscape, standardizing engineering configurations, and consolidating overlapping vendor functions. Embedding built‑in governance and integrating agentic AI technologies, the leader will drive continuous optimization, upskilling the team toward advanced automation capabilities.

• Lead, manage and grow multiple teams of product‑focused software engineers
• Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of engineers
• Work with product managers to understand desired application capabilities and testing scenarios
• Continuously improve software engineering practices
• Collaborate within and across Agile teams to select, design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across full‑stack development tools and technologies
• Ensure craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of solutions
• Stay on top of technology trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, participate in internal and external technology communities, and mentor community members
• Encourage innovation, implementation of cutting‑edge technologies, inclusion, outside‑of‑the‑box thinking, teamwork, self‑organization, and diversity
• Improve velocity across teams
• Deploy new and existing applications into AWS environments
• Break monolithic applications into micro‑service architectures and build new microservices

• Bachelor’s Degree
• At least 7 years’ experience in software development
• At least 7 years’ experience in network engineering and architecture
• At least 7 years’ experience in advanced networking concepts in routing, switching and Wi‑Fi
• At least 5 years’ experience in people management

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a Master’s Degree in Software Engineering
• 10+ years’ experience in software development
• 10+ years’ experience in advanced networking concepts in routing, switching and Wi‑Fi
• 8+ years’ experience in cloud and software‑defined networking
• 5+ years’ experience in Agile practices

Salary ranges (annual) vary by location:

• McLean, VA: $269,100 – $307,200
• Plano, TX: $244,700 – $279,200
• Richmond, VA: $244,700 – $279,200
