Senior Backend Developer (Java/Spring Boot) - CW Freddie Mac - McLean, VA

Freddie Mac’s Investments & Capital Markets division is seeking a Senior Backend Software Developer to join the team building our Derivative Analytics platform — a sophisticated server-side system that interfaces directly with the firm’s risk models, market data feeds, and analytics engines.

In this role, you will own the design and development of scalable Spring Boot services and APIs, enabling financial analysts and quants to execute complex security modeling quickly and accurately. You’ll work closely with quantitative analysts, business stakeholders, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver high-performance, integrated data solutions in a financial environment.

• Backend Architecture & Development:
  Architect, develop, and maintain scalable Spring Boot microservices and RESTful APIs that process complex financial calculations and handle high-throughput data requests.
• System Integration & Data Aggregation:
  Connect backend services to existing internal platforms and upstream data sources to retrieve market data, execute risk analytics, and aggregate multiple disparate datasets.
• Database & Query Optimization:
  Design relational database schemas, write complex, high-performance SQL queries, and manage data persistence utilizing Spring Data JPA or Hibernate.
• Code Quality & Testing:
  Write clean, maintainable backend code backed by comprehensive automated test suites using JUnit and Mockito, ensuring rigorous unit and integration testing coverage.
• Technical Debt & Continuous Improvement:
  Proactively identify and resolve system bottlenecks, optimize API latency, reduce backend technical debt, and champion core software engineering best practices.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration:
  
  Actively participate in backend architecture discussions, schema designs, and pull request reviews, ensuring robust, modular, and secure software delivery.

• 5+ years of professional software development experience, focusing heavily or exclusively on backend web services and API engineering.
• Expert proficiency in Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem (including Spring Web/REST, Spring Security, Spring Data JPA, etc.).
• Strong experience working with relational databases, writing complex SQL queries, and optimizing database interactions.
• Solid experience with automated testing frameworks, specifically JUnit, Mockito, or similar backend test runners.
• 2–3 years of experience with Git in a collaborative, team-based development workflow (branching strategies, PRs, code reviews).
• Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical backend workflows into concepts easily understood by business stakeholders and quants.

• Familiarity with Java 21 features and modern asynchronous or reactive programming paradigms.
• Experience with message brokers or event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ) in a financial services context.
• Working knowledge of fixed-income concepts: duration, convexity, spread, option-adjusted spread (OAS), and related derivatives.
• Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, or Podman).
• Proficiency with shell scripting for automation, deployment support, and operational troubleshooting.
