Position Summary
The McMinnville Public Library is seeking a friendly individual to join the Children’s Work Group as a desk assistant. This is a part-time (average 15 hours/week) position that will be scheduled 3 days per week, including daytime, evening, and weekend hours. Saturday availability is highly preferred.

Essential Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Library Team Member
- Provide customer service such as communicating positively with patrons, partner organizations, and city coworkers.
- Assist with promoting and coordinating library programs and events.
- Participate in the training of new employees and volunteers.
- Provide input for unit budget preparation as required.
- Problem solving patron issues (including behavior issues).
- Enter and maintain records and data.
- Perform routine office support functions such as processing mail, answering phones and ordering supplies.
- Participate in the hiring process for employees and volunteers.
Children’s Services Work Group
- Assist patrons with locating and selecting materials and resources to fit their needs.
- Engage with families regarding literacy programs at the library.
- Prepare bibliographies, book lists, and displays.
- Participate in the selection of new material.
- Prepare material for displays and programs.
- Assist in group tours about the library.
- Participate in presentations and programs.
- Library promotion inside and outside of the library.
General Job Functions
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other agencies, and the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.
- Participate in committees when requested.
- Maintain proficiency in job requirements which may include attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility, which may require travel.
- Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
- Maintain confidentiality, data integrity, and comply with all related city, state, and federal standards related to confidentiality.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to qualify would be a high school degree.
Knowledge Of
- Principles of customer service and standard office practices.
- Technology in public libraries and applications such as Microsoft Office
Skill And Ability To
- Learn the Dewey Decimal system.
- Learn library software (ILS) procedures.
- Learn about Library collections.
- Understand and follow instructions
- Ability to exemplify traits that reflect the City’s culture, including integrity, a customer service orientation, cultural competency, trustworthiness, flexibility and a willingness to change.
Preferred Training/Certifications/Licenses
- Previous library experience or related coursework.
- Fluency in English and Spanish languages.
- Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification system
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions
The position requires regular (60-80%) ability to use dexterity and fine motor skills. Frequent (51-80% of the time) use of office equipment. The position requires some (20-40%) physical effort such as lifting, carrying, or movement, etc. Movements required to complete work require continual speed, agility, hand eye coordination and equipment operation. The work environment is well protected, with virtually no hazards or obstacles (0-5%).
There is very little element of personal risk or hazard. Job conditions are usually stable, with virtually no (0-5%) issues of confinement, temperature change, incident of noise, or interactions of a disagreeable nature, inside/outside work, dirty conditions, exposure to contagious disease, etc.
