Job Title: Instructional Assistant – 1 to 1 Student Assistant
Salary Range: $17.34 - $23.24 (2025–2026 school year)
Reports to: Building Principal or Designee
This position is 183 days (6.25 hours per week) with 6 paid holidays, paid sick leave and 3 days of paid flexible personal leave per year. If hired after the start of the school year, days and leave are pro‑rated. Job SummaryIn addition to the job duties of the IA I position, this position’s primary responsibility is instruction and intervention with a specific student in a 1:1 capacity who requires special education or behavior intervention services. The staff member may also carry out program activities as planned and scheduled by licensed personnel and provide instruction to individual and small groups as directed by the licensed staff.
The position monitors student safety and behavior in various settings. The existence of this student‑specific position is in direct fulfillment of an identified student’s needs as described in that student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Cessation of the student’s need for a 1:1 assistant, by either reevaluation of the student’s needs through the IEP process or by the student vacating the program, will result in the end of the position.
Job Functions
- Engage in behavior management activities as directed by the licensed staff member.
- Ability to follow specific plans and protocols when working with students, including physical restraint.
- Document progress of students to assist the teacher in assessing progress with education plans and maintain or assist in maintaining student progress reports.
- Assist students with common daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, including diapering. Provide health services and assistance, such as changing dressings, assisting with oxygen, insulin, nebulizers or inhalers, and assisting with walkers, wheelchairs, canes, crutches.
- Help support the assigned student in developing positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults.
- Promote safety of the students through the application of the district’s student management and safety guidelines.
- Monitor individual students, classroom and/or playground activities to provide a safe and positive learning environment. Take steps to intervene when students are not in control, not in the proper location, or may be in dangerous or unsafe situations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or designee.
- Be familiar with the school/district policies and procedures governing the work.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- Maintain classroom equipment, materials, and students’ files and records to ensure availability of items as required.
- Perform record keeping and basic clerical functions, scheduling, copying, etc., to support the teacher in maintaining student files and providing classroom materials.
- Assist other personnel as may be required to support them in the completion of their work activities.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- Confere, under the supervision of the teacher, with teachers, parents, and/or appropriate community agency personnel to assist in evaluating students’ progress and implementing students’ objectives, while assuring protection of student confidentiality consistent with staff, administrators, and school/district policies and procedures.
- Participate in various meetings and professional development activities to share information and improve skills/knowledge.
- Assist with the transition of students, including supervision of students to and from the bus, supervision of loading and unloading of buses, and supervision of students to and from classes.
