  • Evaluate, plan, implement, and document nursing care given to the patients in the pre-operative and acute post-operative setting. Function within the Kansas Nurse Practice Act, to deliver comprehensive, family centered nursing care to all patients.

Perioperative Registered Nurse Essential Functions/Accountabilities:
  • Principal Accountabilities:
    • Coordinate the surgical patients care in the pre-operative and acute post-operative setting.
    • Assess patient understanding of plan of care, to better facilitate opportunities and materials during immediate post-operative hospital stay, working from admission to dismissal.
    • Follows established protocols for medication administration ensuring the 5 rights of medication administration are met.
    • Communicates pertinent information related to patients’ condition to inform doctors, additional staff nurses and/or ancillary departments of patients’ needs and/or plan of care.
    • Document concerns, findings, and actions, implementing appropriate care plans related to patients’ diagnosis for continuity of care.
    • Assess patients’ conditions, continuously monitor changes in status, physical findings, vital signs, coping skills ensuring appropriate care is given related to patient’s needs.
  • Department Specific Accountabilities:
    • Performs and documents admissions, dismissal, and intermittent nursing assessments in the peri-operative setting as appropriate per policy and patient needs.
    • Assess patient risk and initiate measures to prevent unplanned perioperative hypothermia to maintain normothermia in a range from 36oC-38oC (96.8oF-100.4oF).
    • Manage patients’ postoperative nausea and vomiting to prevent prolonged postoperative stay and unanticipated admission.
    • Manage Patient’s postoperative pain and comfort to prevent prolonged post-operative stay and unanticipated admission.
    • Demonstrate knowledge about the psychological, sociologic, and spiritual responses of patients and their families to the operative or other invasive procedure.
    • Maintains competency of procedures, equipment, and supplies in the peri-operative setting.
    • Assists perioperative staff, including surgeons, anesthesia providers, RN’s and surgical technologists, in providing quality care to the surgical patient.
    • Takes call on rotation with other staff during OR non-scheduled hours as appropriate.
  • Other Job Accountabilities:
    • Provides postoperative education to patients and family as appropriate.
    • Participates in the professional development of self and team members.
    • Maintains confidentiality as required by HIPPA regulations.
    • Exhibits professionalism at all times.
    • Other duties as assigned.
Perioperative Registered Nurse

Qualifications:
  • Education: Associate of Nursing degree or equivalent formal training program. Bachelor of Science Nursing preferred.
  • Experience: 6 months practicing as an RN in an acute hospital setting. PACU or ER experience preferred.
  • Licensure/

    Certifications:

    • Licensed in the State of Kansas as a Registered Nurse
    • ACLS & PALS verified within 6 months of hiring.
  • Skills:
    • Knowledge of surgical procedures and the immediate peri-operative process.
    • Strong communication skills
    • Good organizational and time management skills
    • Computer skills related to Word, Outlook, and Windows.
