Job Title
This position provides support in coordinating contracted custodial services of City buildings, inspecting City facilities for preventive or unscheduled maintenance, stocking supplies, and performing a variety of skilled manual labor on city structures, facilities, and grounds.

- Respond promptly to emergency service requests.

- Reduced maintenance and repair expenses through effective preventative maintenance and timely repairs.
- Competence in managing work orders and maintenance logs.

- Ability to handle changing and competing demands.
- Spread ice-melting materials on sidewalks and shovel snow and ice from walkways.
- Participate in street and parking lot snow and ice plowing operations.
- May work with a crew to assist with garbage, yard waste, and brush collection.
- Perform other general maintenance duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- General knowledge of manual labor and maintenance work performed by the City of Mebane.
- Ability to receive, understand, and successfully carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to perform manual labor tasks.
- Ability to identify and report maintenance needs or safety issues to a lead worker or supervisor.
- Ability to establish and maintain relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to effectively communicate with the public and city staff while demonstrating courtesy and tact.
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time and be available to work overtime and weekends if required.
- Ability to work as a member of a work crew or team on assignments.
- General knowledge of safe working practices.
- Ability to respond to work for emergencies or in support of other personnel as required.
Physical requirements include:
Work in this class is considered medium to heavy work requiring exertion of more than 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employees must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned as well as recognize and apply safety standards to work performed. Employees must have the stamina to engage in strenuous physical work for extended periods of time.
Working conditions include:
Employees are primarily subject to outside environmental conditions including extreme cold and heat as well as noise levels requiring workers requiring the wearing of protective gear. Employees are subject to physical workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rain and snow, and potential exposure to chemicals as well as atmospheric conditions including fumes, odors, dust, dirt, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
Employee may work in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, manholes, small enclosures, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
Education and experience include:
Graduation from high school or GED, with experience in building maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position.
Special requirements include:
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License – Class C without restrictions
- May be required to obtain an NC Commercial Driver's License (Class
B) - Employees in this class must be capable of working regular work hours and be available to work weekends or holidays, and available for call-in duty in emergencies.
