Position Description

Position Summary

The Department of Computing, Mathematics and Physics at Messiah University invites applications for a full-time term-tenure track mathematics faculty position beginning August 2026.

Responsibilities

Teach introductory to advanced undergraduate mathematics classes to departmental majors, other STEM majors (primarily engineering), and students in the general education curriculum; serve as academic advisor to students in the department. Statistics, Computer Science, or Physics courses may also be included in the loading, depending on the applicant's qualifications and/or interest. In addition to these traditional teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to be an active scholar and to contribute to departmental and institutional initiatives.

Qualifications

PhD in Mathematics. Messiah University selects its educators for their Christian commitment as well as their proven teaching ability. They are outstanding teachers, scholars, authors, and experts in their fields. Candidates must evidence the potential for strong classroom teaching.

The Program

Messiah University's Computing, Mathematics and Physics department offers the following undergraduate degrees: BA in Mathematics, BA in Mathematics with Secondary Teaching Certification, BS in Actuarial Science, BS in Data Science, BA and BS in Physics, BA in Physics with Secondary Teaching Certification, BS in Cybersecurity, BS in Computer Science, BA in Computer Science with Secondary Teaching Certification, BS in Software Development, BS in Digital Media, and minors in Computing, Mathematics, and Physics.

In spring 2025, the department graduated 29 students, 9 of whom completed one of the majors related to mathematics.

The Department

The Department of Computing, Mathematics and Physics comprises 12 full-time faculty members: 6 in mathematics/statistics, 5 in computing, and 1 in physics. In addition to serving approximately 100 students in our majors, the department enrolls more than 2,500 students in courses annually, including online summer courses.

Faculty pursue scholarship and professional interests in pure and applied mathematics, statistics education and consulting, applied physics, web development, artificial intelligence, computer simulations, programming and programming languages, ethics of technology, service learning, and integration of Christian faith and scholarship. Core attributes we seek to instill in our students, include a Christ-like character, competence in the discipline, preparation for lifelong learning, perseverance, and strong communication and relational skills.

The University

Messiah University is a Christian university of the liberal and applied arts and sciences and has a student body of over 2,700 undergraduate students including 21.3% under-represented and 1.5% international students from 23 countries and over 900 graduate students including 28.1% of students from under-represented populations.
