Overview
Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C., is hiring an Engineering Manager for their Carter Global Power Division in Richmond, Virginia. The Engineering Manager leads all engineering activities supporting the design, deployment, and operation of mobile and modular distributed power plants utilizing natural gas turbines and natural gas reciprocating engines. The role provides technical leadership across the full project lifecycle—from front-end engineering and design (FEED) through mobilization, installation, commissioning, operations, and maintenance—for turnkey power solutions serving data centers, utilities, oil and gas, and industrial markets.
Operating within an owner-operator business model, the Engineering Manager ensures that all electrical, mechanical, and controls engineering deliverables are technically sound, standardized, cost-effective, and aligned with long-term asset ownership and operational performance.
- Lead engineering activities supporting design, deployment, and operation of mobile and modular distributed power plants (natural gas turbines and natural gas reciprocating engines).
- Provide technical leadership across the full project lifecycle (FEED through mobilization, installation, commissioning, operations, and maintenance) for turnkey power solutions.
- Ensure electrical, mechanical, and controls engineering deliverables are technically sound, standardized, cost-effective, and aligned with asset ownership and performance goals.
- Oversee design of generation systems to meet requirements, performance guarantees, and commercial commitments on time and within budget.
- Collaborate across functions to achieve best results and support customer-focused solution development.
- Demonstrate risk management and technical decision making; coordinate multiple competing tasks and demands; maintain strong analytical skills.
- Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and ensure long-term operations and maintenance support for generation assets.

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
- Minimum ten years of experience in power generation or energy infrastructure.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience delivering turnkey, owner-operated power projects.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Experience with modular or mobile power plants.
- Experience supporting long-term operations and maintenance of generation assets.
- Strong understanding of grid-interconnected and behind-the-meter power systems.
- Thorough understanding of distributed power generation solutions.
- Demonstrated experience with natural gas turbines and/or reciprocating engines.
- Ability to oversee design of generation systems to meet requirements and commitments on time and within budget.
- Familiarity with data center or mission-critical power applications.
- Commercial acumen with strong technical depth.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across functions and communicate complex technical concepts to commercial, executive, and customer audiences.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; good attention to detail; strong organization and prioritization skills.
- Must have an excellent driving record and be willing to travel overnight or out-of-town via car or airplane.
- Ability to operate in fast-paced, growth-oriented environments; able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Demonstrated software proficiency.

Physical requirements must be met for the Engineering Manager job, including regularly being required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
