Utility Technician
Hanover County Government offers a technical position for a Utility Technician. The incumbent performs routine repairs on utility equipment and works in areas such as electrical/mechanical, utility construction, sewer collection operations, and distribution operations.
The Utility Technician is part of Hanover County's Career Development Program (CD). The Utility Technician Ladder has four levels ranging from Utility Technician I to Utility Technician III and Senior Utility Technician for only the electrical/mechanical classification. Incumbents report to a Utility Supervisor or Superintendent and supervise no staff; however, Senior Utility Technicians and Utility Technicians III may serve as workflow leaders to lower-level Utility Technicians.
Essential functions include operating and organizing the use of utility tools, equipment, and vehicles; ensuring all safety regulations are met; troubleshooting and managing emergency situations; maintaining maintenance records and completing work orders efficiently; conducting preventive maintenance and repairs; repairing and installing water and sewer lines; operating construction equipment; cleaning wastewater lines/lift stations; operating lift stations; maintaining and flushing waterlines; operating well systems;
collecting and analyzing water samples; calibrating residential meters; and performing residential pressure tests.
Working conditions include exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, noise, vibrations, and repetitiveness; adverse weather; heavy manual work; and intermittent lifting of objects weighing at least 50 lbs.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include understanding and following oral and written instructions; familiarity with equipment and techniques necessary to perform assigned work tasks; and a high school diploma or equivalent required with related experience preferred.
Special conditions include a criminal records check, fingerprinting; a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License at hire; a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 24 months of employment for all technicians except for distribution technicians; a pre-employment physical examination and repeated regularly thereafter; a pre-employment drug test/breath alcohol testing and repeated in accordance to policy thereafter; audiometric testing; a twelve-month probationary period;
working beyond normal schedule; shift work, including weekends, holidays, and nights; wearing a uniform including safety equipment; and being on routine on-call.
