Overview
The Office of Academic Space Management (ASM) coordinates the operation, planning, and stewardship of research, teaching laboratory, and academic space across Arts, Sciences & Engineering (AS&E), including both the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering. ASM serves as a strategic resource to school leadership, academic units, faculty, and university partners in setting priorities for the development, assignment, renovation, and use of research and academic spaces.
ASM directly manages multiple facilities on the Medford/Somerville campus, including the Tsungming Tu Complex, Collaborative Learning and Innovation Complex, Joyce Cummings Center, Science & Technology Center, Barnum Hall, Eaton Hall, and Bacon teaching laboratories, while also providing planning and project support across AS&E's broader academic and research space portfolio.

The Senior Director of Research Operations and Academic Space Management will play a critical role in supporting faculty success, faculty recruitment, research growth, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the effective stewardship of laboratories, research facilities, classrooms, and academic spaces that advance the teaching and research mission of Tufts University.

Reporting to the Executive Administrative Dean of the School of Engineering and working in close partnership with the Executive Administrative Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, the Senior Director of Research Operations and Academic Space Management serves as a strategic advisor and operational leader responsible for helping shape the future of research operations and academic space across Arts, Sciences & Engineering (AS&E).
In this highly visible leadership role, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for research operations, laboratory and academic space planning, building operations, and space governance. You will partner with faculty, department leaders, and university stakeholders to ensure that research, teaching, and academic spaces effectively support faculty success, faculty recruitment, research growth, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the long-term priorities of both schools.
Key Responsibilities:Strategic Research and Academic Space Planning
- Develop and implement short- and long-range space strategies, including a multi-year research space plan that supports the schools' academic, research, and strategic priorities.
- Advise school leadership on the effective, safe, and compliant use of research laboratories, teaching labs, offices, classrooms, and academic support spaces.
- Partner with faculty, academic departments, and university stakeholders to assess space, equipment, infrastructure, and access needs in support of faculty recruitment, onboarding, retention, and research growth.
- Lead and support space assignments, renovations, decommissioning efforts, and new construction planning across the schools' research and academic portfolio.
- Advance initiatives that promote interdisciplinary teaching, research collaboration, and effective stewardship of shared resources.
- Partner with school leadership on capital planning and budgeting efforts, ensuring that space and infrastructure priorities are aligned with long-term institutional goals.
- Serve as the primary school-level liaison with Campus Planning, Planning Design & Construction, Facilities Services, University Information Technology (UIT), Environmental Health & Safety, Public Safety, vendors, architects, and contractors.
