Muslim Chaplain - University Chaplaincy-)
This is a part-time position, working 21 hours per week.
The Tufts University Chaplaincy is a dynamic hub supporting religious, spiritual, ethical, and cultural life for all members of the Tufts community on all of Tufts’ campuses. The University Chaplaincy provides pastoral care, supports religious and philosophical communities, educates about spiritual and ethical issues in society and the world, and promotes multi-faith engagement within Tufts’ tradition of progressive thought in education.
Reporting to the Office of the President, the University Chaplain leads the University Chaplaincy team, which currently includes six Chaplains (Buddhist, Catholic, Humanist, Jewish, Muslim, Protestant); two Advisors (Hindu and Africana); administrative, program, and music staff, and student workers. The University Chaplaincy works with roughly 20 campus religious and philosophical communities that offer many weekly gatherings and special programs. Beyond its work supporting these communities, the University Chaplaincy offers its own tradition-specific and multi-faith programming and services for the whole university.
The department also manages the care and use of Goddard Chapel and the Interfaith Center.
Assists the University Chaplain with overall support for spiritual and ethical life at Tufts by providing primary spiritual and philosophical leadership, organization, and advising for their faith community. Advises the Muslim Student Association and provides outreach and support for Muslim students across all Tufts programs; supports multiple multi-faith and Muslim prayer spaces; works with Dining Service on halal dining options; works with campus partners, including Admissions, on outreach to Muslim students and families;
works with the Office of Residential Life and Learning on advising for the Muslim House and other housing needs for Muslim students; works with the Tufts Muslim Alumni Association and Advancement related to fundraising and community-building; works with campus partners, including the University Chaplain and Office of Equal Opportunity, on matters related to religious accommodations for prayer and consultation on other relevant needs.
Basic Requirements
- Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of Masters degree in divinity, theology, religion, philosophy or a related field
- 2 years of experience in chaplaincy/religious leadership or young adult/campus ministry within and across the particular community, which may include internships
- Appropriate theological background and/or chaplaincy training, including demonstrated skills in community and leadership development, worship leadership, spiritual education and program development, pastoral care, service and social justice leadership, multi-faith dialogue, and interfaith engagement
- Experience in higher education and understanding of young adult development through a student empowerment and community-organizing approach
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; excellent leadership, administrative, and organizational skills; excellent professional judgment and discretion; ability to work as part of a team; understands when to lead and when to seek input and support others; actively seeks feedback and continuous improvement; knows how to advocate within multiple responsibilities; maintains appropriate confidentiality; models integrity, honesty, trust, and professional ethics
- Multicultural knowledge and skills, commitment to nondiscrimination and social justice, and demonstrated experience working in spiritually and culturally diverse settings
- Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office, contact management systems, and website maintenance
- Master of Divinity
- Grant-writing and fundraising experience
Requires evening, weekend, and holiday work/service. May be required to respond to occasional emergency situations. Travel to all campuses.
