Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Location: Medford Township
Public Works/Mechanic’s Helper – Medford Township.
Is seeking a dependable individual for the full-time position of Mechanic's Helper. This entry-level position assists with the maintenance and repair of Township vehicles, heavy equipment, small engines, and mechanical equipment used in Public Works and water and wastewater operations.
Responsibilities- Assist mechanics with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance, including fluid checks, oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, and tire service.
- Help troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, braking, and related equipment systems.
- Assist with maintenance of pumps, motors, generators, compressors, valves, and related utility equipment.
- Retrieve parts, move vehicles and equipment, and support shop and field repairs.
- Clean and organize tools, equipment, work areas, and parts storage areas.
- Assist with maintenance records, snow removal, storm response, utility emergencies, and other Township operations.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic mechanical knowledge and an interest in vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- Ability to safely use common hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
- Valid New Jersey driver's license in good standing.
- Ability to follow instructions and perform physically demanding work indoors and outdoors.
- Prior automotive, diesel, equipment‑maintenance, vocational‑school, or shop experience is preferred.
- A New Jersey Commercial Driver's License is also preferred. The successful applicant may be required to obtain a CDL within a timeframe established by the Township.
Schedule:
The position requires overtime and emergency response, including nights, weekends, and holidays, when necessary.
Compensation and Benefits:
Compensation: $21.50 to $23.50 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Eligible full‑time employees receive a comprehensive benefits package that may include health benefits, paid leave, holidays, life insurance, and enrollment in the New Jersey Public Employees' Retirement System. Benefits are subject to applicable Township policies and collective‑negotiations agreements.
Employment may be contingent upon successful completion of applicable background, driving‑record, physical, and drug‑screening requirements.
