Summary: Assists the Media Specialist (when present) in managing a library collection and performs various media center and computer lab clerical and paraprofessional duties, including working with groups of students in developing media skills and assisting with computer lab needs. Identifies computer network glitches and performs appropriate minor network and computer software/hardware maintenance and repair.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of the principal, works with groups or individual students, developing media and computer skills.
  • Works closely with and follows the direction of the Media Specialist.
  • Inventories, repairs, and manages supplies, equipment, and textbook materials.
  • Orders supplies, books, AV software, and educational materials that the Media Specialist has approved.
  • Maintains the library collection under the direction of the Media Specialist.
  • Checks out materials and books to staff and students before, during, and after school.
  • Assists the teacher in maintaining order among the students in the Media Center and supervises and helps students in the library and/or computer lab.
  • Prepares media center exhibits and displays and assists in setting up special events.
  • Prepares and processes work orders.
  • Re-shelves books and materials.
  • Installs computer software, performs simple software maintenance using appropriate system utilities and instructs staff and students on proper software and hardware usage.
  • Trains and supervises student assistants.
  • Identifies computer network glitches (troubleshoots), performs appropriate minor network maintenance and minor device troubleshooting/repair, and works closely with NTS regarding technical issues.
  • Researches new software and orders requested software as approved.
  • Communicates effectively with IMC concerning usage licenses.
  • Keeps current on new technology.
  • Assist teachers with computer testing (i.e., TESA, STAR, and AR).
  • Provides storytelling and book talks to classes, if requested.
  • Maintains competency in all position responsibilities.
  • Complies with all safety and work rules, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for proper utilization, operation, and maintenance of all department resources.
  • Provides support to other positions as needed.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as appropriate with little or no supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Marginal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides support for special programs using library materials and computers.
  • Researches new authors and books.
  • Organizes and decorates learning spaces.
  • Inspects area for safety or health hazards and reports hazards promptly to the appropriate staff.
  • Cleans and sanitizes equipment, sets up, inventories and moves equipment, and discards old/broken equipment.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Assists in directing the work of student and parent volunteers and building support staff working in the library.
  • All Medford School District employees are responsible for supervising students and maintaining a safe environment.
