Summary: Help meet the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a self‑contained classroom. Assist in implementing classroom programs, including behavior management, self‑care, and instructional programs. Work under the principal’s general supervision and the certified teacher’s immediate direction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist teacher in an instructional setting.
- Assist teacher in maintaining classroom discipline using appropriate methods for children with and without disabilities, including intervening in crises and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed using CPI techniques.
- Organize and manage student work under teacher direction.
- Assist teachers in correcting and recording student work and in testing students.
- Assist students with daily work, including on computers with various computer programs and testing programs.
- Work directly with students with various special needs, recognizing differences in each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapting methods and interaction accordingly.
- Implement planned activities using teacher‑designed methods and materials for individual and small student groups for instructional support.
- Supervise student activities, including the playground, cafeteria, bus loading and unloading, field trips, hallways, and other areas where students gather.
- Prepare and provide clerical support to the teacher for instructional materials using various office equipment, resource materials, AV equipment, copying, faxing, etc.
- Maintain accurate records and gather information within the scope of district policies and state and federal laws while maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Obtain necessary instructional materials from a variety of sources.
- Assist with toileting students who are incontinent or require assistance with catheterization or transfer and provide other personal care needs, including diapering as necessary.
- Administer medications within the scope of district policies and state and federal laws, including diabetes management and insulin administration using an insulin pen or a non‑needle injection system.
- Assist with wheelchair transfers as required by student needs.
- Implement Individual Education Plan (IEP) modifications at the teacher’s request.
- Schedule and assist with IEP meetings.
- Maintain competency in all position responsibilities.
- Comply with all safety and work rules, policies, and procedures.
- Responsible for properly utilizing, operating, and maintaining all department resources.
- Provide support to other positions as needed.
- Assume additional responsibilities as appropriate with little or no supervision.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Set up room for activities and clean up after activities’ completion.
- Answer telephones, respond to questions or take messages and forward them to the teacher.
- Assist with school‑wide events.
- Assist with the inventory of textbooks.
- Assist with in‑home visits.
- All Medford School District employees supervise students and maintain a safe environment.

Experience:
Must meet current highly qualified requirements.
