Position Summary
Timber Products Company is looking for a detail-oriented Cost Accountant to join our finance team in Medford, Oregon. In this critical role, you'll focus on accurate product costing, variance analysis, and cost control in a dynamic manufacturing environment. You'll partner closely with finance, operations, sales, and management to drive profitability, support budgeting/forecasting, and identify opportunities for efficiency in our manufacturing divisions.
This position is not remote. The incumbent must be able to work fulltime at Timber Products' Medford, Oregon facility.
- Develop, maintain, and update standard costs for materials, labor, overhead, and finished products; calculate and analyze production variances (material, labor, overhead) and provide clear explanations to management.
- Perform detailed cost analysis on manufacturing processes, including raw material usage, production efficiency, inventory valuation, and cost of goods manufactured/sold.
- Prepare regular cost reports, profitability analyses by product/customer/division, and ad-hoc analyses to support pricing decisions, operational improvements, and strategic planning.
- Assist in monthly/period-end close activities: reconcile inventory and cost accounts, post journal entries related to manufacturing costs, and ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Collaborate with operations and procurement teams to monitor inventory accuracy, observe physical inventories, and enforce cost-related procedures.
- Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes by providing cost projections, breakeven analysis, and scenario modeling.
- Analyze impacts of changes in raw materials, product designs, manufacturing methods, or production volumes on costs; recommend cost-saving initiatives.
- Maintain and improve cost accounting systems and processes; ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies.
- Assist with year-end audit preparations, tax support, and other financial projects as needed.
- Stay current on industry trends, cost accounting best practices, and manufacturing efficiencies through professional development.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
- 3+ years of cost accounting or relevant manufacturing finance experience (wood products, forest products, building materials, or similar process manufacturing preferred).
- Strong understanding of standard costing, variance analysis, inventory valuation, and manufacturing cost principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced functions, pivot tables, data analysis) and comfort learning ERP systems (Microsoft Dynamics experience a plus); familiarity with data tools like Power BI is advantageous.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and communicate insights clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a proactive problem-solving mindset.
- CPA, CMA, or progress toward certification.
- Experience in product costing for wood products, panel manufacturing, or similar industries.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles or continuous improvement methodologies.
- Prior exposure to inventory cycle counts, BOMs (bills of materials), and production reporting.
