Summary
Join the City of Medford Parks & Recreation team as a part‑time Tree & Landscape Laborer. In this role you’ll assist the City Arborist with maintenance of Medford’s urban forest, focusing on city street trees. Typical duties include pruning, chipping, planting and watering, along with general tree and landscape upkeep in parks and right‑of‑way areas. You’ll operate equipment such as chippers, mowers, and stump grinders and help keep public spaces clean, safe and welcoming.
This is a hands‑on position for someone who values teamwork, follows safety practices, and is dependable in day‑to‑day field work.
Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Experience with tree pruning.
- Experience running chainsaws and wood chippers.
- Monday – Wednesday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM.
The anticipated hiring range for the Tree and Landscape Laborer position is $18.36 (first step) to $19.28 or $20.24 (second or third step). The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education, experience, and qualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials, alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act.
Three steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.
- Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) retirement contributions paid by employer for part‑time, year‑round positions.
- Paid sick leave – one (1) hour accrued for every 30 hours worked.

Job Duties Essential Functions of the Position
- Responsible for tree maintenance, pruning, hand weeding, watering and chipping debris.
- Ability to operate handheld and gas‑powered equipment.
- Operate various equipment to include riding mowers, chippers, stump grinders, and tractors.
- Perform landscape and equipment maintenance.
- Work in right‑of‑way areas.
- Assist in herbicide application.
- Assist park staff in a variety of daily tasks or special projects.
- Perform labor safely in all types of weather.
- Prepare and read simple reports and field diagrams.
- Work with minimum supervision while performing daily tasks.
- Follow oral, written, and drawn instructions.
- Relate to the public in a positive respectful manner.
- Must be honest and truthful in all tasks and responsibilities.
- Adheres to safety practices and standards when performing all duties.
- Responsible for removing trash and ground litter in City of Medford parks and right‑of‑ways.

Position is physically demanding, requiring strength and endurance to perform tasks such as climbing trees, lifting and carrying equipment up to 75 pounds, and operating sharp tools and machinery. Requires ability to safely use a variety of tools, including chainsaws, ropes, and harnesses while managing hazards such as falling branches and unstable trees. Regular duties consist of frequent lifting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crawling, along with repetitive movements and stretching for equipment use and maintenance.
