Job Summary

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team. You welcome customers cheerfully, answer questions, and connect readers with the right titles and products. You play an essential role in maintaining the store’s attractive presentation and efficient operation, including unpacking deliveries, shelving items, and keeping displays tidy.

You operate the registers quickly and friendly, ensuring customers receive a highly professional service.

• Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
• Fill scheduling gaps when possible, showing flexibility and responsiveness to store needs, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and most holidays.
• Approach work positively and with energy, performing tasks with purpose and reliability.

• Use varied technology, including registers, computers, tablets, and other tools comfortably and efficiently.
• Develop strong merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
• Apply visual merchandising skills to gifting, toys, and other product categories.
• Run the register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
• Support receiving, unpacking, and accurate shelving of deliveries.
• Locate books and products accurately using knowledge, colleagues, Book Master, and available tools.
• Support the café team willingly and effectively when needed.
• Understand loss‑prevention procedures and de‑escalation techniques, identifying theft and seeking support for problematic behavior.

All tasks require physical activity, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking. Mobility across other store locations may be required as part of cluster support.

• Build comprehensive book knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, children's books, and other categories.
• Use knowledge to maintain sections and present books attractively.
• Provide effective book recommendations throughout the store.
• Learn to sell books positively, supporting key sales objectives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, pre‑orders, and others.
• Develop expertise in educational toys, games, hobby and collectibles, music, movies, newsstand items, and new areas as they arise.
• Use knowledge to maintain all sections and backstock effectively, supporting customer needs and sales goals.

Upon mastering the outlined skills and demonstrating continued growth, you are eligible to advance to Senior Bookseller, where new challenges and further opportunities for career development arise.
