Overview

Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) are responsible for providing security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner. Duties may also include securing high‑profile events, important figures, and any activities involving transportation systems.

Salary Information

The salary range for Medford, OR (MFR - Rogue Valley International Airport‑Medford) is $42,526 to $56,844, or $20.38 to $27.24 per hour, including locality pay of 17.06 %.

At this time, this airport is only seeking qualified female candidates to meet mission‑related staffing needs. Applications of male candidates will be accepted but not considered until staffing needs change.

Duties
  • Operate various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and on passengers, preventing those objects from being transported onto aircraft.
  • Perform searches and screening, which may include physical interaction with passengers (e.g., pat‑downs, search of property, etc.), conducting bag searches and lifting/carrying bags, bins, and property weighing up to 50 lb.
  • Control terminal entry and exit points.
  • Interact with the public, give directions, and respond to inquiries.
  • Maintain focus and awareness while working in a stressful environment that includes noise from alarms, machinery, people, crowd distractions, time pressure, and disruptive or angry passengers in order to preserve the ability to identify and locate potentially life‑threatening or mass destruction devices, and to make effective decisions both in crisis and routine situations.
  • Engage in continuous development of critical thinking skills, necessary to mitigate actual and potential security threats, by identifying, evaluating, and applying appropriate situational options and approaches. This may include application of risk‑based security screening protocols that vary based on program requirements.
  • Retain and implement knowledge of all applicable Standard Operating Procedures, demonstrating responsible and dependable behavior, and adapt to new information or unexpected obstacles.

Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. National.
  • Minimum age of 18 at the time of application.
  • Selective Service registration is required.
  • Must pass a structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.
  • Subject to post‑employment random drug and/or alcohol testing.
  • Must be available to work various shifts and overtime as needed.

  • Mandatory travel for training; occasional travel may be required.
  • Exposure to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals is inherent in this position.
Physical Demands
  • Maintain physical agility to squat and bend.
  • Ability to repeatedly lift and manipulate baggage and containers weighing approximately 50 lb and other objects subject to security processing.
  • Ability to walk up to three (3) miles during a shift and stand for prolonged periods (up to 4 hours) of time.
Qualifications

To qualify for the SV‑D pay band (equivalent to the GS‑5/6), meet one of the following (A OR

B):

  • Experience: At least one year of full‑time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X‑ray technician.
  • Education: High‑school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC certificated.

Credit for experience is based on a 40‑hour workweek. Part‑time experience is credited on a part‑time ratio. Volunteer work in National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) counts toward experience.

Additional Requirements

Occasional travel may be required for training; a minimum of three (3) weeks of travel in full‑time duty status may be required.

Selective Service registration must be verified for male applicants born after 12/31/59.

Applicants must have no delinquent federal or state taxes, or past‑due child support payments.
