Summary
This is a hands‑on lead role for someone with strong asphalt and construction maintenance experience who takes pride in quality work, understands how to keep a crew and project moving, and is ready to serve as a trusted resource in the field. You will help plan, coordinate, and perform asphalt, concrete, and right‑of‑way maintenance and rehabilitation projects throughout the community, leading and training crew members, coordinating equipment and materials, and working with the team to deliver safe, durable results for residents.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as crew lead, prioritizing and assigning work, training staff in the assigned section.
- Lead and perform skilled equipment operation and public works construction and maintenance tasks.
- Create, install, inspect, repair, and alter signs, systems, equipment, structures and facilities; maintain streets, sewer lines, storm drainage, bridges, pump stations, grounds, and facilities.
- Perform manual labor activities such as excavating, grading, sidewalks, and debris cleanup.
- Create traffic control plans and oversee work‑zone traffic control.
- Operate medium‑sized equipment or large trucks (e.g., backhoes, skid‑steer trucks, line stripers, dump trucks, mowers, vacuum trucks, video inspection equipment, excavators, pavers, loaders, rollers, water trucks, street sweepers).
- Operate, maintain, and repair hand and power tools (rollers, concrete saws, mixers, chainsaws, jack hands, pumps).
- Perform emergency services during adverse weather (e.g., snow and debris removal, sanding, high‑water response).
- Respond to after‑hours/on‑call needs.
- Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and discretion of the Public Works Director.
- Monitor, plan, and participate in asphalt, concrete, and right‑of‑way maintenance and rehabilitation; plan and participate in bridge repair.
- Schedule equipment and material use; coordinate transportation issues.
- Provide database work in software applications; complete logs, documents, schedules, and reports.
- Meet with contractors, the public, and engineering/building representatives to plan projects, resolve issues, and inspect contractor work.
- Uphold organization values and provide strong customer service orientation.

Education and Experience
- High‑school graduation or GED equivalent.
- Four (4) years of equipment operation and related construction or maintenance experience.
- Valid Class A Oregon Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Maintaining a CDL is a condition of employment.
- Acceptable driving record throughout employment.
- Must live within a 60‑minute response time from the City’s Service Center at 821 N. Columbus Ave.
- Flagger certification.
- Traffic Control Technician (TCT) or Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) certification.
- Monday – Thursday, 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM (four 10‑hour days with three days off each week).
The position is part of the Teamsters C&M employee group. Salary range: $30.69 (first step) to $32.22 (second step) or $33.83 (third step). Pay is based on education, experience, and qualifications, with six steps allowing annual advancement.
