Plastipak Packaging, Inc. is seeking an R&D CNC Machinist to support innovation in rigid plastic packaging. In this role, you will program, set up, and operate CNC equipment to produce precision prototype and low-volume production components for R&D tooling and equipment. You will interpret complex engineering drawings and 3D models, select tooling and machining strategies, and verify dimensions using precision measuring instruments.
Working closely with engineers and technicians, you'll help refine designs, improve manufacturability, and support trials on advanced manufacturing lines. Commitment to safety, quality, continuous improvement, and documentation is essential in our fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
- Program, set up, and operate CNC mills/lathes for prototype and low-volume R&D parts
- Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and 3
- D models to determine machining approach
- Select tools, fixtures, speeds, and feeds to optimize quality and efficiency
- Inspect parts using precision measuring instruments and document results
- Collaborate with engineers and technicians to refine designs and improve manufacturability
- Support R&D trials and tooling changes on production and pilot equipment
- Maintain CNC equipment, tooling, and a safe, organized work area
- Follow safety, quality, and continuous improvement procedures and standards
Required Skills
- CNC programming (mills and/or lathes)
- CNC machine setup and operation
- CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, etc.)
- Blueprint reading and GD&TPrecision measurement (micrometers, calipers, CMM, gauges)
- Fixture and tooling selection
- Surface finishing and tolerance control
- Basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting
- Shop math and machining calculations
- Documentation and quality control procedures
