Position Purpose

To provide spiritual leadership and perform duties in conjunction with the Head Chaplain, to the Upper School community. To advise students and their parents relating to community service placement. To participate in school crisis management, as needed. To minister and provide pastoral care to students, faculty, staff and parents in times of need.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Priest ordained in the Episcopal Church or currently in the ordination process.
  • Master’s degree in Divinity.
  • Experience with student populations in all grade levels, with an emphasis on 7-12.
  • Physically able to perform assigned duties.

Reports To

Head Chaplain, who is responsible for providing spiritual leadership to the entire school community.

Travel

This position may require travel between campuses and to offsite locations.

Performance Abilities
  • Work with all major departments and divisions to achieve strategic initiatives.

  • Perform all duties as requested by the Head of School and the Head Chaplain.
  • Maintain a pattern of prompt and regular attendance.
Essential Functions
  • Foster a spirit of Christ’s love in the school community.
  • Plan, Schedule, and Conduct a minimum of 3 Chapel services per week and monthly Eucharist services.
  • Create a Eucharist support team and work with Eucharistic Ministers.
  • Plan and implement special services of worship such as Founders’ Day, Veteran’s Day, and Baccalaureate, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Grandparent’s Day, and Thanksgiving Basket Blessing, fostering student involvement via the Chapel Council and the Chapel Leader programs.
  • Assist in the coordination of special memorial services as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Head Chaplain on matters of mutual interest, including serving as celebrant at Upper School Eucharist services.
  • Provide spiritual direction and counsel to the Head of School, students, faculty and staff.
  • Be present and interact with the students before and after school as well as lunchtimes and breaks.
  • Foster an environment of Christian hospitality, warm and welcoming to all in a faith-filled environment.
  • Assist with morning and afternoon carlines, as requested.
  • Teach up to 2 (two) Upper School classes each semester as well as a summer Ethics course as needed.
  • Provide pastoral care to the full breadth and diversity of school students, faculty, groups, and families, as needed.
  • Communicate with Faculty and Staff on all student deaths or family deaths; with the permission of the family.
  • Make hospital visits to any seriously ill student or staff member.
  • Provide oversight to a program of Christian education for 7th through 12th grade inclusive of theology, biblical studies, world religions, and morals and ethics.
  • Support prayer times, bible study and retreat opportunities for faculty and students.
  • Lead and provide support for Chapel Counsel Students.
  • Work with the Praise Band to incorporate Christian music into Chapel time.
  • Explore and promote the school’s ongoing relationship with its sister school(s) with a regular program of visits, fund- and friend-raising on its behalf.
  • Supervise and maintain the Upper School’s community service program.
  • Attend the biennial NAES conference and promote NAES programs and resources to the school.
  • Assist in supervision of students, as assigned (i.e. carline, lunch duty, break time).
