SUMMARY:

Incumbents are responsible for performing lead journey level helicopter mechanic duties, which includes maintaining, repairing, inspecting, and testing fire helicopters and ground support equipment. Incumbents are also responsible for maintaining the helicopter maintenance program according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules and regulations.

The Senior Fire Helicopter Technician is the second level in a two level helicopter mechanic series. The Senior Fire Helicopter Technician is distinguished from the Fire Helicopter Technician by its supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Serves as a supervisor, which includes: prioritizing and assigning work; training employees on work methods and procedures; conducting performance evaluations for subordinates; verifying that work performed on aircraft or components meets applicable requirements and regulations; and, performing other related duties.

Performs helicopter maintenance and inspections on mechanical systems, electrical systems, hydraulics systems, painting, structural repair, powerplant, flight controls, avionics, firefighting equipment, and/or other related systems; repairs and overhauls components; transmissions, gear boxes, main rotor hubs, tail rotor rubs, and/or other related components.

Purchases and maintains aircraft parts and supplies and special tools and equipment.

Maintains the Air Operation maintenance hangar facility and procures all equipment, parts, tools, and supplies for air operation helicopters.

Assists in administering the section budget, which includes: authorizing the purchase of supplies and equipment; paying invoices; monitoring expenditures; completing and submitting requisition forms to purchase aircraft parts and other supplies; and, performing other related duties.

Maintains records maintenance log books, historical component cards, aircraft weight, and balance records, equipment lists, notes, and manufacturer’s service bulletin compliance records; signs off on log book entries for return to service.

Monitors the Federal Excess Personal Property (FEPP) program for assigned station(s), which includes: screening items, controlling inventory, maintaining records, and performing other related duties.

Reads, interprets, and follows Manufacturer's Maintenance Technical Manuals, Alert Service bulletins, FAA Airworthiness Directives, including parts schematics for the inspection, maintenance, and repair activities of fire helicopters and other related systems and components; and writing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Diploma (GED), and five years of directly related maintenance, repair, and inspection of Bell helicopters or medium type aircraft models; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Valid California Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); and will be required to obtain a Class B CDL with Air brake, Tank, and Hazardous Materials endorsements within six (6) months of hire;
Valid Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant Certification; and Valid FAA Inspection Certification.
